Chijoke Onuora

Chijioke Onuora (b. 1962) hails from Iyi Enu, Ogidi, Anambra State, Nigeria. He is a Professor of Sculpture in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Onuora’s artworks offer profound insights into Igbo culture, reflecting themes such as Igbo mythology, the duality of existence, marketplace interactions, and the activities of the Umuada society. His innovative exploration of various media underscores his versatile creative spirit and exceptional craftsmanship. Over three decades of studio practice, Onuora has showcased an extensive range of works, including tie-dye textiles, woodwork, drawings, and paintings, exhibited both locally and internationally. His unique drawing style, shaped by his Ghanaian mentor Seth Anku, has earned him widespread acclaim. In 2022, his solo exhibition Mark Making was featured at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Lagos. Notable earlier exhibitions include his participation in the Gallery of Small Things at the Dak'Art Biennale in Senegal (2018), Prints from Nsukka at the Goethe Institute in Germany, Africus: Art in a Shadow at the 1st Johannesburg Biennale in South Africa (1995), and Beyond Nsukka Hills at the Sawhill Gallery, James Madison University, Virginia, USA.
